Our thoughts and prayers go to the people and animals affected by hurricane Sandy. Now that the storm has passed and people have begun to assess the damage, they may also be looking for a missing pet. Being lost, especially after a disaster, is a scary time for a pet—we’re cold, scared and hungry.
Here are some tips to assure that you and your pet will be reunited after a disaster:
1. Have your pets microchipped.
2. Make sure that your pet’s tag is readable. The most durable tags are made of steel or heavy plastic.
3. Take good (color) photographs of your pet. Don’t forget the close-ups!
4. If your pet is missing, contact your local animal control, humane society and any local shelters or rescue groups. There’s a good chance that your pet will end up in one of these locations.
